Keep a watch out for Himalayan tahrs on position, shy spotted deer, and birds, including the colorful male Danphe pheasant, Nepal’s national bird. Descend to the water-driven prayer wheels at Phunki Thenga, an all-time low point north of Namche at 3,250 meters. After crossing the Dudh Koshi near its confluence with the Imja Khola, lead off a steep two-hour climb through rhododendron forests and dwarf conifers up to the hilltop village of Tengboche. Tengboche offers splendid views of the Everest group and houses a crucial monastery that merits a visit, especially vibrant during the Mani Rimdu festival in October, featuring Tibetan Opera and masked dancing. Spend the night in Tengboche, soaking in the serene atmosphere and cultural richness of this location.

From Tengboche, descend to the quaint stone village of Debuche, which sits at an altitude of three,820 meters and is home to a nunnery. After crossing the Imja Khola, the trail gradually ascends to Pangboche at 3,860 meters, where you will be treated to stunning rear views of the towering Ama Dablam. Continue along the river to its confluence with the Lobuche Khola, then on to Dingboche, the last year-round settlement within the region. Here, walled terraced fields protect crops like barley, buckwheat, and potatoes from the cruel elements and wildlife. Spend the night in Dingboche, nestled amidst this rugged yet beautiful landscape.

To aid in acclimatization, take a trek from Dingboche north to the Nangkartshang Gompa ridge, situated at 4,800 meters. This viewpoint offers breathtaking views of the Nuptse Glacier, Chhukhung Ri at 4,230 meters—which obscures the glaciers on Lhotse—and Imja Tse (Island Peak) at 6,189 meters. Further east along the Mahalangur Himal Ridge, you'll gaze upon the imposing Makalu, which stands at 8,463 meters. To the south, you’ll see Amphu Lapcha’s fluted ridge at 5,845 meters and a singular perspective of Ama Dablam’s north face and its glaciers. After absorbing these spectacular sights, return to your teahouse in Dingboche to rest and indurate the subsequent leg of your journey.

From Dingboche, begin a gradual ascent to a ridge resulting in the little hamlet of Duse at 4,500 meters, where you will be greeted with western views of Taboche and Cholatse. Continue through the high-altitude pastures, or kharkas, to achieve Duglha at 4,620 meters. From there, undertake a steep climb for about an hour up the vast stony terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. This path is lined with balanced-stone memorials dedicated to climbers who have lost their lives within the mountains. The trail offers views of border peaks like Khumbutse, Lingtren, and Pumori to the north, while Everest remains concealed behind the imposing Nuptse-Lhotse wall. End your day in Lobuche, where you may spend the night, preparing for the subsequent phase of your journey towards Everest Base Camp.

From Lobuche, follow a desolate trail along the moraine to Gorak Shep, the last seasonal village situated below the towering Pumori. After an early lunch in Gorak Shep, set out for Everest Base Camp (EBC), located on the Khumbu Glacier opposite the infamous Khumbu Icefall, known for its daunting challenges during Everest ascents. within the high season of April-May, EBC is bustling with porters and vibrant with colorful tents scattered across the glacier. Outside of those months, the campsite is stark and quiet, then again the sounds of nature and occasional avalanches. While Everest and also the Western Cwm remain obscured by the West Ridge, the experience at base camp is unforgettable.
