Difficulty Level of Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek
The Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek is considered moderate in difficulty. It is shorter than the classic ABC trek, usually taking 7 to 10 days, but still requires a reasonable level of physical fitness. Trekkers will walk 5–7 hours a day on hilly trails, stone steps, and occasional steep sections. The trek passes through beautiful rhododendron forests, terraced villages, and high mountain landscapes, which makes it rewarding despite the challenge. Beginners can manage this trek with some preparation, while regular hikers will find it enjoyable and not overly strenuous.
Tips for Handling the Trek’s Challenges
Even though the trek is moderate, some parts can be tiring, especially when ascending to Machapuchare Base Camp and ABC itself. Walking at a slow and steady pace, taking enough rest, and staying hydrated are key. The altitude rises to about 4,130 meters at ABC, so mild altitude sickness can occur for some people. Wearing good trekking shoes, carrying lightweight gear, and having warm clothing will make the journey easier and safer. Trekking agencies like Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition provide support, porters, and guides to make the trek comfortable for everyone.
Why the Trek is Worth It
Despite being moderate, the Annapurna Base Camp Short Trek offers incredible views of Annapurna, Machapuchare, and other Himalayan peaks. Winding through a mix of farmland, village paths, forests, and terraced rice fields, the journey to Ghandruk is an immersive experience, crossing several traditional villages like Birethanti, Syauli Bazar, Chimrung, and others. It typically takes about 4 to 5 hours to trek from Nayapul to Ghandruk, during which we’re treated to stunning views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and the iconic Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain).

We’ll encounter additional settlements such as Dovan and Himalaya en route, with the trail meandering through richly forested areas. Spring treks are especially vibrant, as the forests come alive with the colorful blooms of rhododendrons.
After reaching Himalayas, our ascent continues through drier woodland, accompanied by a river that guides us towards Deurali. A highlight of this segment is a beautiful waterfall created by the river, providing a perfect spot for a brief pause to savor the tranquil surroundings before proceeding to Deurali.
The trek advances, weaving through verdant farmlands before taking a dramatic turn to cross the Budhi Gandaki River on a swaying suspension bridge. The ascent to Rana offers a prelude to the deeper, secluded realms of the Budhi Gandaki valley. Traversing ancient forests dotted with mani stones, the path to Ghap is both a physical journey and a spiritual passage. Venturing through Prok village, trekkers are treated to the majestic sight of Singri Himal, enhancing the trek’s visual feast. Alongside the river, marked by numerous crossings, the trail is lined with dense forests and ancient stupas. This segment of the journey peaks with a challenging yet rewarding climb to Namrung, promising an unparalleled sense of achievement and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead.
Departing from Annapurna Base Camp, we embark on a steep descent along rocky trails, passing Machhapuchhre Base Camp.
