Annapurna Base Camp Trek is an unforgettable adventure that takes you through the heart of the beautiful Annapurna Range in Nepal. This trek covers 70 kilometers of stunning landscapes, where you can see towering peaks like Annapurna, Machhapuchhre (also known as Fish Tail), Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, Lamjung, and Fang. It’s a journey full of natural beauty and cultural experiences. The trek is designed to help you adjust to higher altitudes gradually, making the experience both safe and enjoyable.
The trek begins in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. You will spend a day exploring the city’s historical sites, temples, and bustling markets. After that, you will take a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, a beautiful city near the Annapurnas. Pokhara is the starting point for your trek. Before you begin your journey, you can relax by the lakeside, enjoy the views of the Himalayas, and experience the lively atmosphere of this popular tourist town.
From Pokhara, you’ll drive to Nayapul, where the actual trek begins. The trail takes you through dense forests filled with oak trees, rhododendrons, and bamboo. As you follow the path along the Modi Khola River, you’ll get closer to the Annapurna peaks that surround you on all sides. The trek offers not just beautiful views, but also a chance to experience the rich culture of the local people.
On the way, you’ll pass through many villages, where the locals belong to the Gurung and Magar ethnic groups. These villages are nestled on terraced hillsides, with traditional houses and friendly locals. One of the highlights of the trek is Ghandruk, a village famous for its cultural heritage. In Ghandruk, you can visit the Ghandruk Cultural Museum, which showcases the history, art, and lifestyle of the people living in the Annapurna region.
As you continue your trek, you will enter the Annapurna Sanctuary, a natural wonder leading to the Annapurna Base Camp. This is the highest point of the trek, sitting at an altitude of 4,130 meters. Here, you’ll be surrounded by a breathtaking amphitheater of mountains and glaciers. The view of the sunrise from the base camp is an unforgettable experience, with the peaks glowing in the early morning light.
After spending some time at the base camp, you’ll begin your descent. On your way back, you will stop at the natural hot springs in Jhinu. These hot springs are a perfect way to relax your muscles and soothe your body after several days of trekking. The trek ends with a drive from Dhampus Phedi back to Pokhara, where you can enjoy a restful afternoon.
The Annapurna Base Camp trek is moderately difficult. It takes about 7 to 12 days to complete, depending on your pace. The trail goes uphill most of the time, which can be tiring. You will walk through forests, villages, and rocky paths. The weather can change quickly, so you need to be prepared for cold and rain. The altitude gets high, which might cause breathlessness or mild sickness. Good fitness and some trekking experience help a lot. With proper rest, food, and water, most people can complete the trek safely and enjoy the amazing mountain views.
Check your health before the trek.

Listen to your guide and follow their advice.
Don’t rush; rest often.

Travel insurance for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek is very important. It should cover high-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, accidents, and helicopter rescue. The trek goes over 4,000 meters, so altitude sickness is possible. Always check your policy carefully and carry a copy. It helps keep you safe and stress-free.
The Annapurna Base Camp trek reaches high altitudes, where there’s less oxygen. This can cause altitude sickness—headache, nausea, tiredness, and dizziness. It can get serious if not treated quickly. That’s why it’s very important to have travel insurance. Make sure your insurance covers high-altitude trekking (up to 4,130 meters) and emergency evacuation by helicopter. If you get sick, a helicopter may be the fastest way to get help. Always check the details of your insurance policy before trekking. Being prepared can save your life in the mountains. Stay safe and trek responsibly!
The best seasons for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these times, the weather is clear, skies are blue, and views are stunning. Temperatures are pleasant, and there’s less rain or snow, making trekking safer and more enjoyable for everyone.
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek costs around $700–$1,300 depending on your choices. Here’s a simple breakdown: Trekking permits (TIMS and ACAP) cost about $50. A guide charges $25–$35 per day, and a porter costs around $20–$25 daily. Accommodation is $5–$10 per night, while meals cost $15–$30 per day. Transport from Pokhara to the trek starting point is $25–$35. If you hire a tour company, it may cost more but includes everything. Always carry extra cash for snacks, tips, or emergencies. Prices may vary by season, so plan and book early to get the best deals.
To trek to Annapurna Base Camp, you need two permits: the TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) and the ACAP Permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit). You can get both in Kathmandu or Pokhara at the Nepal Tourism Board office. These permits help protect the area and keep trekkers safe. You need to carry passport-sized photos and your passport to get them. The total cost is around NPR 5,000 for foreigners. Always carry these permits during your trek, as you’ll need to show them at checkpoints along the way. Without them, you may not be allowed to continue the trek.
Finally, you’ll drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu, passing through the Middle Hill region. This scenic drive gives you one last chance to see the rural life of Nepal and enjoy the views of the lower hills and terraced fields.
For those who are particularly interested in seeing the sunrise over the Himalayas, there is also the Annapurna Sunrise Trek, which is another fantastic option. This trek offers beautiful sunrises and sunsets, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Besides the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, you can explore other incredible treks in the Annapurna region. The Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most famous treks in Nepal, offering diverse landscapes and cultural experiences. For those looking for a shorter trek, the Annapurna Poon Hill Sunrise Trek provides stunning views of the mountains without requiring a long journey. The Khopra Danda Trek offers an off-the-beaten-path experience with fewer crowds but just as much beauty. If you’re looking for something more adventurous, the Nar Phu Valley Trek takes you to remote valleys with unique Tibetan culture. Lastly, the Mardi Himal Trek is a great option for those seeking solitude and stunning mountain views.
Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition offers all these treks, ensuring a well-planned and memorable experience in the Annapurna region. Whether you’re looking for a short trek or a challenging journey, there’s a perfect option waiting for you.
The weather at Annapurna Base Camp changes a lot. Spring (March–May) is warm and clear. Autumn (September–November) is cool and dry—great for trekking. Winter (December–February) is very cold with snow. Summer (June–August) brings heavy rain. Always check the forecast before trekking and pack clothes for both cold and rain.

Upon arrival in Pokhara, you’ll be transferred to your hotel near the lakeside. After check-in, take time to relax or enjoy a gentle walk along Phewa Lake. Pokhara offers a peaceful atmosphere with stunning views of the Annapurna range, setting the perfect tone for the trekking adventure ahead.
After breakfast in Pokhara, we begin our journey with a scenic 1 hour and 15-minute drive to Nayapul, the starting point of our trek. As we leave the city behind, the landscape quickly shifts to lush hills and rural villages, offering a taste of the natural beauty that lies ahead. At Nayapul, we’ll do a quick check of our gear and then start walking along a gentle trail that follows the Bhurungdi Khola river.
The trek gradually ascends through charming villages like Birethanti and Tikhedhunga, passing terraced fields, waterfalls, and forests. The final stretch of the day is a challenging uphill climb up thousands of stone steps to reach Ulleri, a beautiful Magar village perched at 2,080 meters. Once there, we settle into our teahouse, enjoy a warm meal, and rest after a rewarding first day of trekking.
After breakfast, we begin our trek from Ulleri, climbing steadily through lush rhododendron forests and charming mountain villages. The trail offers a blend of stone staircases and natural paths, with scenic views of the surrounding hills and occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks. Along the way, you’ll pass through Banthanti and Nangethanti—ideal spots for short breaks and local tea.
As we gain elevation, the forest becomes denser and more enchanting, especially in spring when rhododendrons are in full bloom. After 4 to 5 hours of trekking, we reach Ghorepani, a beautiful village nestled beneath the Annapurna range. From here, the panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and other Himalayan giants are simply breathtaking. The fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere make Ghorepani a perfect place to rest and recharge.
Early in the morning, we wake up before dawn to hike up to Poon Hill (3,210m/10,530ft), one of the most famous viewpoints in Nepal. The short climb is rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, glowing in the golden light of sunrise. This magical moment, with snowy peaks lighting up against a clear sky, is truly unforgettable and a highlight of the trek.
After enjoying the views and capturing some memorable photos, we return to Ghorepani for a hearty breakfast. Once we’ve fueled up, we begin our day’s trek toward Tadapani. The trail starts with an ascent through lush rhododendron and pine forests before gently descending through serene woodland paths filled with birdsong and natural beauty.
The trek to Tadapani (2,710m/8,890ft) takes about 6–7 hours in total, including breaks and photo stops. Along the way, we pass through charming villages and may even catch glimpses of wild monkeys or Himalayan wildlife. Upon reaching Tadapani, we check in to our teahouse and enjoy stunning views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South, before settling in for a well-deserved rest.
After breakfast, we begin our trek from Tadapani, descending through lush rhododendron and oak forests. The trail offers scenic views of the Modi Khola Valley and passes through charming Gurung villages like Chuile and Gurjung. As we walk, the majestic Annapurna South and Machapuchare (Fishtail) peaks remain in view, adding to the beauty of the journey.
The trail gradually climbs again as we approach Chhomrong, a beautiful village nestled on the hillside. Known as the gateway to Annapurna Base Camp, Chhomrong offers stunning mountain views and warm hospitality. Upon arrival, we check into our teahouse and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, preparing for the next day’s adventure.
After breakfast, we begin our trek from Chhomrong, descending steep stone steps and crossing the Chhomrong Khola on a suspension bridge. The trail then ascends through lush forests and terraced fields, passing small settlements like Sinuwa and Bamboo. As we gain altitude, the landscape transforms, offering cooler air and dense rhododendron and bamboo forests that make the walk both peaceful and scenic.
Continuing along the Modi Khola valley, the path gradually climbs toward our destination, Himalaya Hotel (2,840m/9,320ft). The final stretch offers stunning views of towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and the surrounding greenery. After 6–7 hours of trekking, we arrive at Himalaya, where we rest and recharge, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the high Himalayas.
As you ascend, the dense forests gradually give way to the stark beauty of alpine grasses and bushes, marking the transition into the higher reaches of the Himalayas. At Hinku, 3,100 meters above sea level, explorers are greeted by a mysterious cave, adding an element of adventure before crossing a narrow valley and navigating past avalanche tracks to reach Deorali at 3,140 meters. The trail’s geology, with the canyon’s fascinating side walls, becomes a highlight, alongside the increasingly dramatic views of the sacred Annapurna Sanctuary.
Approaching a ridge, the path ascends to the Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC) for lunch, offering the first full views into the Sanctuary. From MBC, a gentle two-hour trek up grassy slopes leads to the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) hotels, nestled on the glacial moraine of Annapurna South. Here, you stand in awe, some 4,000 meters beneath the towering peaks that form the Sanctuary’s close-knit ice walls, offering a profound sense of accomplishment. Spending the night at Base Camp allows for moments of reflection under the immense peaks, with the promise of a breathtaking sunrise over the Annapurna massif.
On this day, you will trek from Annapurna Base Camp back down to Sinuwa, descending from the high alpine environment to a lower, lush forested area at 2,360 meters (7,742 feet). The trail offers a refreshing change of scenery as you leave behind the snow-capped peaks and pass through rhododendron and oak forests. The descent is gradual but steady, giving you time to reflect on the incredible views and experiences you had at the base camp.
You’ll wake up early to catch the breathtaking sunrise over the Annapurna massif. The golden light illuminating the towering peaks is a magical sight and a perfect way to start the day. After enjoying this peaceful moment and a hearty breakfast, you’ll set off on the trail feeling energized and ready for the day’s trek.
As you make your way down to Sinuwa, the path winds through dense forests with occasional glimpses of mountain streams and waterfalls. The cool mountain air and the sounds of nature accompany you, making the descent both calming and invigorating. Upon reaching Sinuwa, you’ll have time to rest and recharge, preparing for the next stage of your trekking journey.
After enjoying breakfast at Sinuwa, we embark on our journey to Jhinu Danda. The descent through lush woods and farmlands makes for a comfortable and serene trek. We’ll traverse familiar trails and villages, arriving at Jhinu Danda, celebrated for its soothing natural hot springs. An evening dip offers a perfect remedy for our weary muscles, marking a delightful conclusion to our trek. Our stay at a Jhinu Danda teahouse promises relaxation and joy, epitomizing the pleasures of the Annapurna Base Camp trek. The final leg involves a peaceful three-hour walk to Nayapul, followed by a local jeep ride to Pokhara, wrapping up our remarkable journey

As you traverse through the Middle Hills, the route offers picturesque views and a closer look at the daily lives of the local communities. Alongside, the road parallels major rivers like the Trisuli Nadi, originating from the Tibetan plateau, adding a serene backdrop to your journey. The drive also takes you through the lower reaches of the Gorkha region, nestled beneath the towering peaks of Manaslu. This return trip not only connects two major cities but also bridges the natural beauty and cultural richness of Nepal, culminating in an overnight stay in Kathmandu. Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek is considered a moderate-level trek suitable for most trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness and some trekking experience. The trail involves steady uphill and downhill walking through diverse landscapes, including terraced fields, lush forests, and high-altitude alpine terrain. While the daily trekking hours typically range from 4 to 7 hours, the altitude gain can be challenging, with the highest point being Annapurna Base Camp at 4,130 meters (13,550 feet). Proper acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness.
The trek’s difficulty also lies in the varying weather conditions, especially as you approach the base camp, where temperatures can drop significantly. Trails are generally well-maintained, with plenty of teahouses and lodges for rest, food, and accommodation, making it accessible for many. However, the trek requires stamina and mental strength to tackle long walking days and steep sections, particularly between Chomrong and ABC. Overall, the Annapurna Base Camp trek is a rewarding adventure for those ready to embrace moderate physical challenges in one of the world’s most scenic mountain regions.
