Nepal is a beautiful country , famous for its Himalayan mountains, trekking adventures, and rich cultural heritage. Every year, thousands of travelers from around the world come to Nepal for trekking, tours, mountaineering, and cultural holidays. If you are planning your first trip, one of the most important things to know is how to enter Nepal. Travelers can enter by air or land, and both ways are safe and simple if you follow the official rules.
At Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, we guide our guests step by step, from airport arrival to the start of their trek. Whether you are flying into Kathmandu or crossing overland from India or Tibet, we make sure your journey is smooth, comfortable, and well-planned.
The easiest and most common way to get into Nepal is by air travel. The main entry point is Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, the capital city. Almost all international flights land here, making Kathmandu the gateway to Nepal.
Airlines flying to Nepal: Many international airlines connect Kathmandu with major cities. The national carrier, Nepal Airlines (Royal Nepal Airlines), has routes to cities like Delhi, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Doha, Dubai, and Tokyo. Popular global airlines such as Qatar Airways, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Thai Airways, Druk Air, and Indian Airlines also fly to Nepal. This gives travelers many options to book flights according to their budget and convenience.
Travel from far destinations: For travelers from the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, there are no direct flights to Nepal. You will need to take a connecting flight, usually through Europe, the Middle East, or Asia. The journey may take between 20 to 26 hours, depending on your route and layovers.
Airport experience: When you land in Kathmandu, you will go through immigration and customs. You can get your Nepal visa on arrival at the airport by filling out a form, showing your passport, and paying the visa fee. After this, you collect your luggage and step outside, where our friendly Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition team will be waiting to welcome you. We provide airport pickup service so you do not need to worry about finding a taxi or getting lost.
Nepal also shares land borders with India and Tibet (China’s Autonomous Region). Traveling overland is a great choice for people who are exploring South Asia or coming from nearby countries.
From India: The most popular entry points are Raxaul–Birgunj, Sunauli–Belahiya, and Kakarvitta. These borders are easy to cross and are open almost every day. Many travelers come by bus, jeep, or train from India. Indian travelers have very few restrictions, while foreigners can also enter with the right Nepal visa and permits.
From Tibet (China): You can enter Nepal from Tibet via the Kodari Pass or the newer Gyirong–Rasuwa Gadhi border. These are more adventurous routes and often chosen by travelers doing combined Nepal–Tibet tours. Overland travel from Tibet offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas and is a memorable way to arrive in Nepal.
When crossing borders, it is important to have all the entry documents ready. This includes a valid passport, Nepal visa (if required), and sometimes additional permits for certain regions. At Nature Heaven Treks, we assist our clients with all visa and permit arrangements, so the process is easy and stress-free.
To ensure safe and responsible tourism, the Government of Nepal has clear rules for travelers:
Valid Passport – Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months.
Visa – Most travelers can get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport or at certain land borders. Tourist visas are usually available for 15, 30, or 90 days.
Permits – If you are trekking in restricted areas like Manaslu, Upper Mustang, or Dolpo, you need special trekking permits. For popular routes like Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit Trek, you need TIMS card and conservation area permits.
Health & Safety Guidelines – Travelers may need to follow specific health rules depending on global or local situations (such as vaccinations or travel insurance requirements).
Our team at Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition helps every guest by arranging permits, TIMS cards, and national park entry passes, so you do not have to worry about paperwork.
