Machhermo is a small and peaceful village in the Everest region of Nepal. It lies at an altitude of about 4,470 meters (14,665 ft) on the way to the famous Gokyo Valley and Gokyo Lakes Trek. Most trekkers who follow the Everest Gokyo Route or combine it with the Everest Three Passes Trek stop here for the night. Even though it is a small settlement, Machhermo is very important because it helps trekkers rest, acclimatize, and enjoy the beauty of the high Himalayas.
The village is surrounded by snow-covered mountains, open valleys, and a peaceful atmosphere. From Machhermo, you can see beautiful views of Cho Oyu (8,188 m), the sixth-highest mountain in the world. You will also see other peaks like Kangtega, Thamserku, and Kusum Kanguru. Trekkers love to stay here because the natural beauty and calm environment make it a perfect spot to relax before moving higher.
For many trekkers, Machhermo is more than just a night stop. It is a place to rest and acclimatize before heading to Gokyo Ri or Renjo La Pass. Spending a night here helps your body adjust to the thin air at higher altitudes. This is very important because altitude sickness can be dangerous. Machhermo is also known for having an Altitude Sickness Rescue Post, where trekkers can get advice and emergency help.
The trails around Machhermo are wide, open, and scenic. You walk through grassy valleys, rocky paths, and yak pastures. It feels peaceful compared to busier places like Namche Bazaar. Trekkers often say Machhermo is one of the most beautiful stops on the way to Gokyo.
Even though Machhermo is small, it has a few tea houses and lodges for trekkers. The rooms are simple but warm, and you will find traditional Nepali food like dal bhat, noodles, and soup. Some lodges also provide hot showers, Wi-Fi, and charging facilities (with extra cost).
