From Island Peak Base Camp, a 4 to 5-hour trek from Chhukung culminates in preparation and training for the summit push. The lead Sherpa guide provides comprehensive training to ensure climbers are well-versed. Necessary techniques, including the use of crampons, ice axes, rope management, and glacier travel, along with safety equipment like harnesses and carabiners. Training encompasses both theoretical and practical sessions. Theoretical aspects cover climbing principles, weather patterns, and altitude sickness, while practical sessions might involve trekking to a nearby glacier, allowing climbers to practice and refine their skills, ensuring confidence and safety for the upcoming summit attempt.

Summit day- stand at 6,189 m/20,305 ft in the Himalayas

The summit day on Island Peak is an arduous yet exhilarating adventure, beginning in the early hours around midnight. Climbers wake between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM, gearing up in the pitch dark with the aid of headlamps. The ascent starts from base camp, navigating a rocky ridge before encountering a glacier. The path then leads across a challenging snow headwall directly to the summit. The climb demands physical endurance, with guides fixing ropes along the route, including a final steep slope of 60 to 70 degrees. At the summit, climbers find themselves on an airy ridge with breathtaking views of surrounding peaks and clouds, a moment requiring both celebration and caution, symbolizing the culmination of their remarkable journey.

Below we have shared a basic training plan to help you get ready for the climb:

Preparing for the Island Peak climb involves a comprehensive training plan that includes cardiovascular, strength, altitude, hiking, and mental training. Cardiovascular endurance is crucial due to the extensive hiking at high altitudes; thus, incorporating running, cycling, or swimming into your routine is essential. Start with 30 minutes of moderate-intensity cardio 3-4 times a week, gradually increasing in both duration and intensity.

Strength training is equally important, focusing on the legs, core, and upper body to navigate the climb’s physical demands. Exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and pull-ups are beneficial, with a preference for functional movements similar to climbing activities. Aim for 2-3 strength training sessions weekly.

To adapt to Island Peak’s high altitude, consider altitude training to acclimatize your body to lower oxygen levels. This can be achieved through high-altitude stays or using an altitude training mask, though medical advice is recommended before beginning.

Real-world hiking and backpacking experiences are invaluable, helping you adjust to carrying a heavy load, traversing uneven terrain, and enduring variable weather. Plan multiple-day hikes and backpacking excursions as part of your preparation.

Mental fortitude is key to overcoming the climb’s challenges. Engage in mental training through visualization techniques, calming breathing practices, and cultivating a positive, resilient mindset towards the journey ahead. This holistic approach to preparation will equip you for the rigors and rewards of climbing Island Peak.
