Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and welcome at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu (1300m/4260ft).

Welcome to Nepal! Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our friendly team will greet you with a warm smile and a sign bearing your name. You’ll be transferred comfortably to your hotel, where you can relax and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Kathmandu. After settling in, feel free to explore the nearby streets or unwind at your leisure. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Nepali welcome dinner with fellow travelers and our team. It’s a perfect chance to connect, share stories, and experience local flavors. Afterward, explore Thamel’s lively charm before returning to your hotel for a restful night.

Despite recent earthquakes damaging many architectural gems, Kathmandu Valley’s cultural heritage sites remain enriching. Enjoy a daily tour of 5 UNESCO World Heritage sites: Swayambhunath, also referred to as the “monkey temple”; the historical Durbar Square in Kathmandu, featuring ancient temples and also the chance to work out the living goddess, Kumari; Patan’s Durbar Square; the Hindu temple Pashupatinath; and Bouddhanath, the biggest stupa within the world. A car and driver will escort you to every location, waiting while you explore (note: entry tickets and lunch aren’t included).

The journey to Everest Base Camp commences with an exhilarating morning flight to Lukla, setting the tone for the journey ahead. Upon landing, porters join the group, and also the trek towards Phakding village begins. Phakding, our first night’s stop, lies slightly below Lukla, offering a serene start to the trek.
The route to Phakding follows the Dudh Koshi River, meandering through lush forests and so the quaint Cheplung village at 2,660 meters. the trail continues past Thado Koshi Gaon, located at 2,580 meters, involving crossings over several suspension bridges. This leg of the journey offers splendid views of the Kongde Ri and Kusum Kanguru peaks, marking a picturesque commencement to the trek.

An early morning wake-up in Phakding, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day’s adventure. Today’s trek to Namche Bazaar is one of the most exciting sections, filled with scenic beauty and cultural encounters. The trail follows the Dudh Koshi River, crossing several suspension bridges—one of them the famous Hillary Bridge—surrounded by breathtaking views of waterfalls, pine forests, and distant snow-capped peaks.

As you climb higher, the air gets cooler and the trail becomes steeper, especially during the final ascent to Namche. This stretch can be challenging, but the views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Kusum Kanguru make it worthwhile. After about 6–7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Namche Bazaar, the lively heart of the Khumbu region. Here, you can rest, enjoy a warm meal, and soak in the mountain-town atmosphere surrounded by dramatic Himalayan landscapes.

Waking up early in the peaceful mountain air of Namche Bazaar, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. This day is all about helping your body adjust to the altitude and preparing for higher elevations ahead. Instead of a full-day trek, you’ll take a short hike to higher ground—often to the Everest View Hotel or the nearby Sherpa villages of Khumjung or Khunde. These hikes follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle, which is key for proper acclimatization.

The views during this hike are truly breathtaking, offering your first close-up glimpses of Everest, Ama Dablam, and other Himalayan giants. After the hike, you’ll return to Namche Bazaar for lunch and some well-earned rest. Spend the afternoon exploring the vibrant town—visit the Sherpa Museum, local shops, or just relax in a cozy café. This rest day in Namche not only helps your body adjust but also offers a cultural experience in one of the most iconic villages in the Khumbu region.

Wake up early in the peaceful mountain town of Namche Bazaar and enjoy a hearty breakfast with views of the surrounding peaks. After fueling up, you’ll begin today’s trek towards Tengboche Monastery, one of the most spiritual and scenic destinations on the Everest Base Camp route. The trail offers stunning panoramas of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other majestic peaks as you follow the gradual ups and downs of the winding path.

Today’s walk takes around 5–6 hours and includes a descent to the Dudh Koshi River followed by a steady uphill climb through rhododendron forests to Tengboche. Upon arrival, you’ll visit the famous Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the Khumbu region. With the Himalayas rising dramatically behind it, the monastery provides a peaceful place for reflection and breathtaking photography. Enjoy the tranquil surroundings before resting for the evening in this beautiful mountain village.

After an early morning wake-up in the serene village of Tengboche, enjoy a warm breakfast with spectacular views of Mt. Ama Dablam and the surrounding peaks. The peaceful sound of monastery bells and fresh mountain air create the perfect start to your day. Once packed and ready, begin your trek toward Dingboche, gradually descending through rhododendron forests before crossing the Imja Khola River.

The trail then ascends steadily, offering breathtaking views of the Everest region’s rugged terrain. As you walk past charming Sherpa villages like Pangboche, you’ll notice the landscape changing—trees give way to alpine shrubs and open meadows. After a few hours of scenic trekking, you arrive at Dingboche, a beautiful high-altitude village nestled beneath towering peaks. This is your home for the night, and a key stop for acclimatization on the Everest Base Camp route.

Today is an important acclimatization day in Dingboche (4,410 m/14,469 ft) to help your body adjust to the higher altitude. After an early morning wake-up, you’ll enjoy a warm breakfast while taking in the stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Soon after, we begin a short but steep hike to Nagarjuna Hill (5,100 m/16,732 ft), located just above Dingboche. This uphill climb may be challenging due to the thin air, but it rewards you with incredible panoramic views of Lobuche East, Kangtega, Ama Dablam, and even Makalu on a clear day.

The purpose of this hike is to gain elevation and then descend back to sleep at a lower altitude — a key strategy in preventing altitude sickness. You’ll take your time ascending, with plenty of breaks to rest and take photos. After reaching the top and soaking in the views, we carefully descend back to Dingboche by early afternoon. The rest of the day is free for rest, light walking around the village, or simply enjoying the peaceful high-altitude surroundings.

After an early morning wake-up in the peaceful village of Dingboche, you’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast with stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Today’s trek is a relatively short but important acclimatization hike as you make your way to Chhukung, located at 4,730 meters (15,518 ft). The trail gradually ascends along the Imja Valley, offering breathtaking panoramas of towering mountains like Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Island Peak.

As you walk, the landscape opens up into a wide glacial valley with sparse vegetation and a raw alpine atmosphere. The hike takes around 3 to 4 hours at a comfortable pace, helping your body adjust to the increasing altitude. Upon reaching Chhukung, you’ll settle into a cozy teahouse, rest, and take in the incredible scenery. If time and energy allow, an optional short hike to Chhukung Ri (5,550m) offers an excellent view of the Imja Glacier and surrounding Himalayan giants.

Today, we cross Kongma La Pass, the first of the three high passes on our Everest Three Passes Trek, connecting Chhukung village to Lobuche village. Starting early from Chhukung, we follow a remote trail heading northwest along the Nuptse glacier moraine. Alternatively, the trail descends to Bibre and then ascends a high path above Niyang Khola to reach the summit of Kongma La.

At the top of Kongma La, trekkers are rewarded with stunning views of small frozen lakes, fluttering prayer flags, and majestic mountain vistas, including the Khumbu glacier and icy lakes. The trek then continues across the Khumbu glacier, guiding us towards Lobuche village, where we are further immersed in the rugged beauty of the Himalayas in Nepal. This journey forms a key part of the Nepal Treks and offers an unparalleled experience for adventure seekers, including those interested in Climbing in Nepal and exploring the best trekking destinations in the Everest region.

Today’s trek brings us to the iconic Everest Base Camp, located at the base of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. Departing from Lobuche village, we follow the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, making our way toward Gorak Shep. Here, we’ll lighten our load by leaving behind heavy bags at a lodge before continuing the final leg of the journey to Everest Base Camp.

The trail to Everest Base Camp is challenging, with steep, rocky terrain and a mix of ascents and descents, but the destination is well worth the effort. At Base Camp, the atmosphere is filled with excitement and anticipation, shared by mountaineers and trekkers alike. One of the highlights is the stunning view of the Khumbu Icefall, a dramatic and ever-changing glacier. After soaking in the awe-inspiring surroundings, we’ll retrace our steps back to Gorak Shep, where we’ll rest and reflect on our journey to one of the most legendary destinations in the world. This trek is a part of the Everest View Point Treks, offering unmatched views of the Himalayas in Nepal and a chance to experience the thrill of reaching Everest Base Camp, a must-do for adventure enthusiasts.

On this present day, an exhilarating ascent to Kala Patthar marks the prelude to the trek’s conclusion. Embarking before dawn, trekkers aim to realize this renowned viewpoint in time to witness the sunrise illuminating Mt. Everest and its surrounding peaks in an exceedingly very breathtaking display. Kala Patthar provides an unparalleled view of Everest and also the vast Himalayan range, a flash of profound awe and reflection.
Following this early morning venture, the journey leads back to Gorak Shep so retraces the trail towards Dughla. The descent continues from Dughla, culminating in Pheriche village. This segment transitions from the challenge of ascent to a predominantly downhill trek, punctuated by minor ascents, guiding trekkers through the changing landscapes back to the comforts of Pheriche.

Starting early in the morning, we embark on a memorable journey to Kala Patthar, renowned for its unparalleled views of Mt. Everest. This side excursion is a highlight of the trek, designed to capture the awe-inspiring sunrise over the Himalayas, offering a stunning panoramic view of the Himalayas in Nepal. The hike to Kala Patthar is an adventurous challenge, but the reward is a celestial spectacle of towering peaks that marks a key moment of the Everest Base Camp Trek.

After soaking in the breathtaking views, we return to Gorak Shep for breakfast before setting off towards Dzongla. Our route retraces our steps back to Lobuche village, followed by a steep ascent to Dzongla. This quaint high-altitude village offers a peaceful night in a simple lodge, nestled amidst the serene and rugged beauty of the Himalayan landscape. This part of the trek is part of the Everest Three Passes Trek, showcasing the diversity and majesty of the region.

We set out early today for an exciting challenge: crossing Cho La Pass, a key highlight of the Gokyo-Chola Pass Treks. Timing is crucial to avoid the afternoon winds and sudden weather changes, ensuring a smoother crossing. The ascent from Dzongla to Cho La Pass is gradual, but the reward at the summit is a breathtaking panorama of majestic mountains that leaves every trekker in awe.

After conquering Cho La Pass, the path to Thangnak presents a steep, rocky descent, requiring careful navigation. This section of the trek not only tests our endurance but also offers stunning vistas that enhance the experience, making it another unforgettable day in the heart of the Himalayas in Nepal. This trek is part of the larger Everest Three Passes Trek, offering trekkers a chance to experience the raw beauty and challenges of the Nepal Treks and Expedition.

Today’s trek takes us to the enchanting Gokyo Village, a pivotal stop on the Gokyo-Chola Pass Treks. While the distance from Thangnak to Gokyo is relatively short, the terrain presents its challenges, making the journey both rewarding and demanding. As we walk alongside the Khumbu Glacier, the path leads us past a series of pristine alpine lakes, their tranquil beauty adding a serene touch to our adventure.

Approaching Gokyo Village, the awe-inspiring mountain vistas come into view, creating a surreal backdrop that will leave trekkers in wonder. Nestled in this stunning landscape, Gokyo offers a peaceful retreat after the day’s exciting trek, making it the perfect place to rest and reflect on the grandeur of the Himalayas in Nepal. This leg of the trek is a highlight of the Everest Three Passes Trek, a must-do for adventure enthusiasts seeking one of the best treks in Nepal.

Today is a well-deserved rest day in the heart of the Everest Region, but it promises unforgettable views and unforgettable experiences. The morning begins with a trek to Gokyo Ri, a premier viewpoint above Gokyo Village. The trail leads past a serene alpine lake before a steep ascent to the summit, offering stunning panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan mountains, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Cho Oyu, Island Peak, Mt. Makalu, Mt. Pumori, and Cholatse.

After descending, we’ll explore the Gokyo Lakes, a collection of radiant emerald-colored lakes surrounded by snow-draped peaks, creating one of the most visually stunning spectacles in the Himalayas. After relishing the serenity of the lakes, we’ll return to Gokyo Village, where another peaceful night in this breathtaking Himalayan destination awaits. This day is one of the many highlights of the Gokyo Trek, offering an unmatched combination of natural beauty and tranquility.

Today, we embark on the final high pass of our trek, Renjo La, marking a significant milestone in our journey. Departing from Gokyo Village, we face a challenging ascent along a steep trail littered with loose stones, leading us to the summit of Renjo La. From the top, we’re treated to magnificent views of the Himalayas, with panoramic vistas that capture the grandeur of peaks like Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, and Makalu. After taking time to soak in the breathtaking scenery, we begin our descent towards Lumde, a journey requiring careful navigation, as we follow the guide’s lead along the rocky terrain. The day concludes with a restful stop in the tranquil heart of the mountains, allowing us to reflect on the incredible sights experienced across Renjo La.

After a hearty breakfast in Lumde, we begin our trek towards Thame, following a scenic trail that meanders through charming villages and lush forests. Along the way, stunning views of Kantega, Kusum Kanguru, and Thamserku mountains accompany us, enhancing the beauty of our journey. The trek also offers a cultural experience with a visit to a 300-year-old monastery, where we can immerse ourselves in the rich spiritual heritage of the region, adding a meaningful dimension to our adventure.

Before departing Thame, we’ll visit Khari Gompa to seek blessings from the resident monks, beginning our day with a moment of serenity. Useful Info

Best Season for Everest Three Passes Trek

The best times to trek theEverest Three Passes Trek are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During spring, the trail offers clear mountain views, pleasant temperatures, and blooming rhododendrons in multiple colors. Autumn brings stable weather, clear skies, and exceptional views of Mt. Manaslu and surrounding peaks.
Trekking in winter and monsoon seasons is not advised due to heavy snowfall, closed lodges at higher altitudes, and high landslide risks during the rains.

Food on the Trek

Although food choices are limited compared to city areas, trekkers can expect healthy, hygienic meals throughout the journey. A typical trek includes 12 breakfasts, 12 lunches, and 11 dinners.
Breakfast options include Tibetan bread, eggs, cereals, pancakes, toast, fruits, and hot drinks.
Lunch and dinner commonly feature dal bhat, vegetable curries, noodles, thukpa, pasta, soups, and snacks. It’s best to eat fresh vegetables, drink plenty of water, and avoid mixing dairy, meat, alcohol, and coffee.

Accommodation

In Kathmandu, you’ll find a wide range of hotels, but along the trek, accommodation is mostly at basic tea houses. Rooms are twin-sharing, often with shared toilets outside the room. Tea houses have a communal dining area with a fireplace. In higher altitudes, it’s essential to carry a warm sleeping bag.

Everest Three Passes Trek Trek Difficulty

Everest Three Passes Trek is considered one of the most challenging treks in the Everest region. It involves crossing three high mountain passes — Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m) — each requiring long, demanding days of trekking over steep, rugged terrain. These high-altitude crossings push physical and mental limits, making this trek suitable for experienced hikers with good fitness and prior high-altitude trekking experience.

In addition to the passes, the trek also includes visits to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes, adding to the overall elevation gain and duration of the journey. Altitude sickness, changing weather conditions, and remote trails with limited access to medical care can pose serious challenges. However, with proper acclimatization, a slow pace, and strong determination, the trek is incredibly rewarding — offering some of the best panoramic views and cultural encounters in the Himalayas.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory. It must include emergency evacuation and medical expenses, especially for high-altitude treks. Nature Heaven Treks Nepal recommends confirming that your insurer covers adventure activities and trip cancellations.

Altitude Sickness

Tips to prevent altitude sickness:

  • Ascend gradually and allow time for acclimatization

  • Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol

  • Consider taking Acetazolamide (Diamox) after consulting a doctor

  • Descend immediately if symptoms worsen

  • Rest, use portable oxygen if needed, and never ignore warning signs

Recommended Packing List

Essentials include:

  • 50–70L backpack, sleeping bag, headlamp

  • Water bottle/purifier, warm clothes, rain gear

  • Hiking boots, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen

  • Quick-dry layers, thermal wear, first aid kit, toiletries

  • Personal documents, passport, camera, maps, and guidebook

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the starting point of the Everest Three Passes Trek?

The starting point of the Everest Three Passes Trek is Lukla, a small mountain town in Nepal’s Khumbu region. Most trekkers take a short scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, which is famous for its dramatic airstrip and stunning Himalayan views. From here, the adventure begins as you follow trails through Sherpa villages, suspension bridges, and beautiful valleys before tackling the three high passes.

To get from Kathmandu to the trailhead for the trek, most travelers take a private jeep or a local bus, depending on budget and comfort. The exact starting point depends on your trek — for example, Soti Khola for the Manaslu Circuit or Lukla for the Everest region. Some trailheads, like Lukla, require a short domestic flight, while others involve a scenic drive through hills, rivers, and rural villages. Your trekking company, like Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, can arrange all transport for a smooth start to your adventure.

During the Everest Three Passes Trek, you will pass through a series of beautiful Sherpa villages that showcase the culture and charm of the Khumbu region. Key stops include Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Chukhung, Lobuche, Dzongla, Gokyo, Thame, and several smaller settlements along the way. Each village offers stunning mountain views, traditional houses, and warm local hospitality.

To reach Lukla for your trek, most travelers take a short scenic flight from Kathmandu or Ramechhap (Manthali Airport) to Lukla Airport, the gateway to the Everest region. During peak trekking seasons, flights often operate from Ramechhap to avoid Kathmandu’s air traffic, requiring a 4–5 hour drive from Kathmandu. Helicopter services are also available for a faster and more flexible option.
Yes, if flights to Lukla are canceled due to bad weather, you can take an alternative route by driving from Kathmandu to Phaplu or Salleri and then trekking to Lukla, which usually takes 2–3 days. This option is longer but more reliable, especially during the monsoon and winter seasons.

The Everest Three Passes Trek connects to Everest Base Camp through a circular high-altitude route that crosses three major passes—Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m). Trekkers usually start in Namche Bazaar, visit Everest Base Camp via Kongma La and the classic trail, then cross Cho La to reach the Gokyo Valley, and finally pass over Renjo La before returning to Namche. This route offers a more challenging and scenic alternative to the standard Everest Base Camp Trek.

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for booking your trek or expedition with Nature Heaven Treks. Having insurance ensures your safety and peace of mind throughout the journey.

The Everest Three Passes Trek includes three high and challenging mountain passes in the Everest region — Kongma La Pass (5,535 m), Cho La Pass (5,420 m), and Renjo La Pass (5,360 m). Crossing all three offers breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and other Himalayan giants, making it one of the most adventurous and scenic treks in Nepal.

The trek usually takes around 12 to 20 days to complete, depending on the route, pace, and acclimatization days included. Some itineraries are shorter for experienced trekkers, while others allow extra days for rest and sightseeing. Taking enough time ensures a safer and more enjoyable journey.

The best season to do the Everest Three Passes Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months offer clear skies, stable weather, and stunning views of the Himalayas, making high passes like Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La safer and more enjoyable to cross.
For this trek, you should have a moderate level of fitness, as it involves walking 5–7 hours a day on varied terrain, including uphill and downhill paths. Regular exercise like hiking, jogging, or walking for a few weeks before the trip will help prepare your body. You don’t need to be an athlete, but good stamina and a positive mindset will make the journey much more enjoyable.
In the Everest Three Passes Trek, Kongma La is the highest at 5,535 m, followed by Cho La at 5,420 m, and Renjo La at 5,360 m. Among them, Kongma La is generally considered the toughest due to its steep, long ascent, lack of teahouses along the way, and greater exposure to weather conditions.
No, you don’t need previous trekking experience for this trek, but having a basic level of fitness and a positive mindset will make the journey more enjoyable. The trail is designed for both beginners and experienced trekkers, and your guide will support you every step of the way. With proper preparation and determination, anyone in good health can complete it.
The Everest Three Passes Trek is more challenging and adventurous than the classic Everest Base Camp Trek. While the EBC trek follows a single trail to reach Base Camp and back, the Three Passes route makes a full circuit of the Everest region, crossing three high passes — Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m). This means you not only visit Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar but also explore remote valleys like Gokyo and enjoy 360° mountain views from multiple angles, making it perfect for experienced trekkers seeking a tougher, more scenic journey.
Yes, we offer special group discounts for our treks. If you are traveling with friends, family, or an organized group, you can enjoy reduced prices based on the number of participants. The bigger the group, the more you save, making it a cost-effective and fun way to experience the trek together.
Yes, you can combine the Everest Three Passes Trek with both Gokyo Lakes and Island Peak climbing for a more adventurous Himalayan journey. The trek naturally passes near Gokyo Lakes when crossing Cho La Pass, so adding a visit is easy. For Island Peak, you’ll need extra days after completing the passes, with a side trip from Chhukung. This combination offers stunning scenery, challenging trekking, and the thrill of a Himalayan summit in one trip.
The Everest Three Passes Trek is worth the extra challenge because it offers the most complete and adventurous experience in the Everest region. By crossing three high mountain passes—Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La—you get to explore remote valleys, visit iconic spots like Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, and Kala Patthar, and enjoy 360° views of the world’s highest peaks from unique angles. It’s a tougher trek, but the reward is unmatched scenery, fewer crowds on certain sections, and the satisfaction of completing one of Nepal’s most challenging and scenic trekking routes.
