Day 1 : Arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport (1 300m/4 260ft)

Welcome to Nepal!
Upon your arrival at the airport, our friendly team will be there to greet you with a warm smile. Look out for a staff member holding a nameplate with your name at the terminal gate for easy identification. From there, you’ll be comfortably escorted to your hotel.

This marks the beginning of your unforgettable Nepal journey. Once you’ve settled in, feel free to unpack, relax, or explore the vibrant surroundings of your hotel at your own pace.

In the evening, join us for a delightful welcome dinner at a traditional local restaurant. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet your fellow travelers and our team, share stories, and get a taste of Nepalese hospitality.

After dinner, you’re invited to experience the lively energy of Thamel — Kathmandu’s buzzing hub of shops, cafes, and nightlife. Soak in the atmosphere before returning to your hotel for a restful night’s sleep, ready to begin your adventure.

Embark on a captivating day tour to explore the heart of Kathmandu Valley’s cultural treasures. With the convenience of a car and driver awaiting your every stop, delve into the wonders of five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Begin your journey at Swayambhunath, affectionately known as the Monkey Temple, a haven of peace and spirituality. Continue to the historical Durbar Square, where ancient temples stand in testament to unique art and architecture, offering a chance to witness the living goddess, Kumari. Visit Patan’s Durbar Square to marvel at its exquisite urban tapestry. Seek blessings at the revered Hindu shrine of Pashupatinath, before concluding your tour at Bouddhanath, the world’s largest stupa, radiating serene energy. (Note: Entry tickets and lunch are not included in this experience.)

Embark on a westward journey to Dumre, traversing the forested Middle Hills that form a natural divide between the High Himalaya and the lowlands of Nepal and India. The road, rich in cultural and agricultural heritage, links Hindu villages with terraced farms and crosses vital rivers originating from northern ice fields. Arriving in Dumre, the route veers north into the Marsyangdi Nadi Valley, leading to Besi Sahar, a bustling commercial hub. Venturing further into the hills, the path reveals ongoing work on a significant hydroelectric project before ascending to Syange. The journey unfolds through a canyon, climbs a ridge to Jagat, a historical toll depot on the ancient salt route to Tibet, and passes Chamje to reach a quaint bus stop. A brief walk across a suspension bridge brings you to Tal, nestled in a serene valley with an impressive waterfall backdrop and peaceful river flows. This picturesque village, complete with palm trees, offers a tranquil retreat for an overnight stay.

The journey starts with a short scenic flight from Nepalgunj (150 m) to Juphal (2,502 m). This flight is often an adventure in itself, offering stunning views of hills, valleys, and snow-capped peaks. Once you land at Juphal, you’ll feel the change in air and altitude immediately. From here, the trek begins toward Dunai (2,850 m), the district headquarters of Dolpo. The trail goes through small villages, terraced fields, and along the riverside, giving you your first taste of the remote lifestyle of Dolpo. With Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, all arrangements like flights, permits, and local guidance are carefully managed so you can relax and enjoy the start of your Dolpo journey.

The trek from Juphal to Dunai takes about 3–4 hours and is considered a warm-up day before going deeper into the Dolpo region. This is one of the most exciting and challenging days of your Lower Dolpo Trek. From Numa La Base Camp, the trail climbs steeply toward Numa La Pass at 5,190 meters. This is the highest point of the entire journey, so you need to walk slowly and steadily. The climb is tough, but the rewards are amazing—on a clear day, you can see mountains like Dhaulagiri, Kanjiroba, and endless snowy peaks of Dolpo. Standing at the top feels like being on the roof of the Himalayas. After enjoying the views and taking some photos, you descend carefully toward Penung Tang, where you will rest for the night.

At Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, we make this part of the trek safe and memorable for you. Our licensed guides will lead you carefully across the high pass, making sure you stay comfortable and confident even at such high altitude. The Lower Dolpo Trek, you will start your walk from Penung Tang (4,465 m) and head toward Dajok Tang (4,080 m). The main highlight of this day is crossing the high and beautiful Baga La Pass (5,070 m). This is one of the toughest but most rewarding parts of the trek. The trail climbs steeply with zigzag paths, and the altitude makes it a slow but steady walk. From the top of the pass, you get breathtaking views of snow-covered mountains, wide valleys, and the wild landscapes of the Dolpo region. For many trekkers, reaching Baga La is a true adventure experience and a memory of a lifetime.

After enjoying the views, you will carefully descend down toward Dajok Tang, a peaceful campsite surrounded by nature. The downhill path can be tricky, but it slowly leads to greener pastures and lower altitude, making you feel more relaxed after the long climb. This day is both challenging and exciting, offering a perfect mix of high mountain adventure, cultural connection, and natural beauty. With Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, you don’t just trek—you travel safely, with expert guides, trusted services, and well-planned itineraries. If you dream of walking through hidden Himalayan trails with comfort and care, this trek with our team is a wonderful choice.

The Lower Dolpo Trek, you will walk from Dajok Tang (4080 m) to Ringmo (3600 m). This is a very exciting day because the trail slowly descends, and you will start to feel the air getting a little thicker as you go down. The path takes you through forests of pine, juniper, and birch trees, making the walk refreshing and peaceful. Along the way, you may see small streams and beautiful landscapes that give you energy to keep moving. After hours of trekking, you finally reach Ringmo Village, a traditional Tibetan-style settlement near the famous Shey Phoksundo Lake. This lake, with its deep blue color, is one of the biggest highlights of the Dolpo region.

At Ringmo (Phoksundo), you will not only enjoy the lake but also get to experience the unique local culture. The village has traditional houses, prayer flags, and monasteries that reflect strong Tibetan Buddhist traditions. This place is also inside Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park, known for its natural and cultural richness. You will trek from Ringmo (3,600 m) to the beautiful Phoksundo Lake (3,611 m). The trail is not too hard on this day, and you will enjoy walking through forests, small villages, and open paths with wonderful mountain views. As you reach the lake, the bright blue water surrounded by rocky cliffs and snowy peaks will leave you amazed. Many trekkers say this is the most magical place in the Dolpo region, and it feels peaceful, spiritual, and pure.

Phoksundo Lake is also inside Shey-Phoksundo National Park, which makes it rich in nature and culture. You can see traditional Bon and Buddhist monasteries nearby, adding a deep cultural touch to your trekking experience. Spending time around the lake gives you a chance to relax, take photos, and feel close to nature. Book your Lower Dolpo Trek with Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition to enjoy a safe, well-guided journey with expert local guides who know the trails, culture, and the best viewpoints around Phoksundo Lake.

You leave the stunning Phoksundo Lake (3611m) and begin your trek down toward Shyanta (2520m). The trail is mostly downhill, passing through pine and birch forests, small villages, and peaceful streams. Along the way, you can enjoy the last clear views of the turquoise Phoksundo waters and the surrounding cliffs. This section is easier compared to the high passes, but you still need to walk carefully on the rocky and sometimes slippery path. As you lose altitude, the air gets warmer, the green forests become thicker, and the landscape feels friendlier compared to the dry upper Dolpo region.

By the time you reach Shyanta, you will feel closer to the lower valleys of Dolpo and on your way back toward Dunai. Shyanta is a welcoming stop with small teahouses where trekkers can rest, enjoy warm meals, and spend the night. This day gives you time to reflect on the beauty of Lower Dolpo Trek, from the mystical Shey Phoksundo Lake to the hidden mountain trails. At Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, we make sure your journey from Phoksundo to Shyanta is safe, enjoyable, and well-organized with caring guides and porters. Whether you are looking for trekking packages, guided tours, Dolpo itineraries, or Nepal trekking services, this part of the trek connects your adventure with comfort and cultural experiences.

Lower Dolpo Trek, you will trek from Syanta (2520m) to Juphal (2320m). This is the final walking day of your journey. The trail is mostly downhill and easy compared to the high passes you crossed earlier. You will pass through small villages, terraced fields, and peaceful landscapes. Along the way, you may see local people working on their farms or carrying goods, giving you the chance to experience the daily lifestyle of the Dolpo region. The air feels warmer here, and the scenery slowly changes as you descend to lower altitude. This last trek is not too long, so you can walk at a relaxed pace and enjoy the beauty of nature one last time before finishing your adventure.

By the time you reach Juphal (2320m), your trek officially comes to an end. Juphal is a small town with a short airstrip, which is the gateway for flights to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu. Here you can take a rest, celebrate the successful completion of your Lower Dolpo Trek, and prepare for your flight back. Useful Info

Best Season for Lower Dolpa Treks

The best season for the Lower Dolpo Trek is spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). These months are perfect for trekking in Nepal because the weather is clear, the skies stay blue, and the Himalayan mountains look stunning. In spring, the hills turn green with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers, while autumn gives golden valleys, stable weather, and crystal-clear mountain views. These seasons are also the safest for trekking, with dry trails, easy river crossings, and less risk of rain or snow. If you want a comfortable and safe trekking experience, spring and autumn are the right choice.

During the monsoon (June–August), Lower Dolpo receives heavy rainfall, which makes the trails muddy, slippery, and risky. In winter (December–February), the region becomes very cold, and snow often blocks the high passes, making the trek difficult. For this reason, most trekking agencies in Nepal, including Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, organize their Dolpo trekking packages mainly in spring and autumn.

If you dream of exploring Shey Phoksundo Lake, enjoying Tibetan culture, and experiencing the hidden beauty of Dolpo, booking your trek in these prime seasons will give you the best trekking adventure in Nepal. For safe and professional service, you can book your Dolpo trek with Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, a trusted trekking agency in Nepal that offers Dolpo tour navigation and commercial trekking services.

Food on the Trek

On the Lower Dolpo Trek, food is simple but healthy and filling. Most meals are prepared in local tea houses and village kitchens along the trekking trail. You can expect Nepali Dal Bhat (rice, lentil soup, vegetables, and pickle) as the main meal, which gives you good energy for long walking days. Other common foods include noodles, Tibetan bread, fried rice, potatoes, soups, and seasonal vegetables. In some places, you may also find momos (dumplings), pasta, or eggs. The food is basic compared to popular treks like Everest or Annapurna, but it is warm, fresh, and enough to keep you strong on the journey.

Since Dolpo is very remote, there are no fancy restaurants, and food prices are higher because everything must be carried in by mules or porters. Drinking water is available but should be purified with tablets or boiled before use. At Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, we always make sure our trekkers get safe meals, clean water, and proper nutrition during the trek. If you want, you can also bring some extra snacks like chocolates, nuts, or energy bars to enjoy on the trail. Choosing the right food and drinking plenty of safe water will make your Dolpo trek adventure safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Accommodation

Accommodation during the Lower Dolpo Trek is very simple and basic because the region is remote. Most nights you will stay in local tea houses, lodges, or homestays run by friendly villagers. These places provide a bed, blankets, and simple meals like dal bhat, noodles, or Tibetan bread. In some high areas, camping may be needed, and our team at Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition will arrange tents, sleeping gear, and kitchen staff for comfort and safety. This way, you can focus on enjoying the trek without worrying about logistics or food.

Trek Difficulty

The Lower Dolpo Trek is considered a challenging trek in Nepal because of its long walking days, high altitude, and remote location. Trails are often steep, rocky, and sometimes cross high mountain passes above 5,000 meters. Trekkers need good fitness, strong stamina, and previous trekking experience helps a lot. While it is not a technical climb, the isolation and limited facilities make it more demanding than popular treks like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna. At Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, we provide professional guides, porters, and well-planned itineraries to make your Dolpo trekking adventure safe, comfortable, and rewarding.

Travel Insurance

When planning your Lower Dolpo Trek in Nepal, it is very important to have the right travel insurance. This trek goes through remote Himalayan areas where there are no big hospitals, so your insurance must cover emergency helicopter rescue, medical treatment, trip cancellation, and baggage loss. Many companies will not allow trekking permits without proper insurance. At Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, we always suggest our clients buy insurance from trusted international providers before traveling. This ensures your safety, peace of mind, and smooth trekking experience in Dolpo.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness can be a challenge on the Lower Dolpo Trek because the trail goes above 4,000 meters. At this height, the air has less oxygen, and some trekkers may feel headaches, dizziness, or tiredness. Walking slowly, drinking plenty of water, and taking proper rest days for acclimatization are the best ways to stay safe. Always listen to your body, and if symptoms get worse, descend to a lower altitude. At Nature Heaven Treks and Expedition, our guides are trained to handle altitude issues and make sure your Dolpo trekking journey is safe and enjoyable.

Recommended Packing List

Essentials include:

  • 50–70L backpack, sleeping bag, headlamp

  • Quick-dry layers, thermal wear, first aid kit, toiletries

  • Personal documents, passport, camera, maps, and guidebook
